Trinity College Dublin Provost’s PhD Project Award:
Development of Novel Anti-Tumour β-Lactams for Treatment of Aggressive Breast Cancer

A PhD position in the research group of Dr. Niamh O’Boyle in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences at Trinity College Dublin is now open to EU and Non-EU candidates and includes an annual stipend of €16,000 for four years.

Project: The PhD student will develop novel anti-cancer drugs to target triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) - the most aggressive and lethal form of breast cancer. The most successful drugs target three receptors common to most breast cancers (estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2 receptors). TNBC does not express any of these receptors and, despite many advances in cancer treatment, remains difficult to treat. This exciting research project is multidisciplinary and the PhD student will undertake practical work in chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry and biochemistry. In the first instance, development of suitable synthetic methods are required. Biochemical studies will be undertaken in collaboration with Professor Daniela Zisterer in the School of Biochemistry & Immunology. The PhD student will work in the dynamic environment of Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI) and will have the opportunity to participate in training courses, workshops, and conferences.

Details: This Provost’s PhD Project Award is open to EU and Non-EU candidates and includes an annual stipend of €16,000 for four years. These doctoral awards are generously funded through alumni donations and Trinity’s Commercial Revenue Unit.  The preferred start date is 3rd September 2018.

Essential Qualifications: A degree (minimum 2.1) in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacy or chemical sciences. Experience in chemical synthesis is desired but not essential.
