RESEARCH INTERESTS

John J. Walsh graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA (Mod) Chemistry in 1990 and PhD in 1994. Following postdoctoral work he joined the lecturing staff in the School in 1997 and since then has led several drug design programs focused on the discovery of new therapies for the treatment of cancer, malaria and allergic conditions. A particular theme of his research is the design of hybrid based compounds, “designed multiple ligands” and targeted therapies and their subsequent in vitro and in vivo evaluation in a range of disease models. Funding for his research has been secured from Enterprise Ireland, Cancer Research Ireland, the Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology and the Higher Education Authority. He lectures to undergraduate pharmacy students, to postgraduate students taking the MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis and Diploma/MSc students in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology.

Assoc. Prof. Walsh is currently an undergraduate external examiner at NUI Maynooth and has previously held this position at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. He is also year 1 coordinator of the BSc (Pharm) programme, Academic Liaison Officer and a College Tutor. Dr Walsh is the recipient of several awards including commendation on being shortlisted for a Provost’s Teaching Award in 2013, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry Letters - Most Cited Article 2003 to 2010 and Henkel Award for Excellence in Organic Chemistry 1988. He has supervised eighteen postgraduate students to completion (14 PhD and 4 MSc).
