Dr Maria J Santos-Martinez is a medical doctor Specialist in Respiratory Medicine from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (Spain) and PhD from the University of Dublin. She was appointed as Assistant Professor (Ussher) in Nanopharmaceutical Drug Discovery (School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences & School of Medicine) in 2010. Her research interests are focused on blood platelets; nanoparticle-cell and nanoparticle-platelet interactions (Nanotoxicology) and cancer. During her PhD studies she developed a novel method for measuring platelet aggregation using a Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). This is a unique and very sensitive technology able to quantify and characterise surface-molecules-cells interactions at nanoscale. Her expertise on the use of QCM-D has been consolidated and she applies this technology for investigating the effect of different compounds, nanomaterials and novel formulations on platelet function and the interactions between nanoparticles developed for drug delivery, their targets and the potential barriers that they have to overcome to exert their action. In the field of cancer, her research is mainly focused on the contribution of platelets to cancer progression (tumor invasion, angiogenesis and blood metastasis).Recognition
